SXSW STUNNERS

Every year, thousands flock to Austin, TX for the annual South by Southwest (SXSW) festival that features music, film, and interactive media. We invite you to check out some of the past films featured at SXSW that we have here on Film Fresh.

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum prove once again their comedic chops in 21 JUMP STREET. In the hilarious re-make of the 80s TV show, they star as two underachieving cops who are sent back to a local high school to blend in and bring down a synthetic drug ring. The film co-stars Brie Larson, Dave Franco, and Ice Cube, and it premiered at SXSW in 2012.

Kathryn Bigelow’s Oscar nominated war film, THE HURT LOCKER, premiered at SXSW in 2009.  The intense story follows an elite squad of soldiers, led by Staff Sergeant James (Jeremy Renner) tasked with disarming bombs in the heat of combat. Powerfully realistic, action-packed, and unrelenting, the film has been hailed as “one of the great war movies” by Richard Corliss of TIME.

The popular horror director Ti West premiered his haunted hotel flick THE INNKEEPERS at SXSW in 2011. The creepy story follows Claire (Sara Paxton) and Luke (Pat Healy), two young employees of the Yankee Pedlar Inn, a once grand hotel that is about to close. Fascinated by the hotel’s haunted history, the pair spend their otherwise boring time at work hunting ghosts throughout the eerie building, and end up biting off more than they can chew.

British film ATTACK THE BLOCK also premiered at SXSW in 2011. The fast, funny, and frightening action film pits a teen street gang against an invasion of savage alien monsters. Their low-income London apartment complex turns into a fortress under siege in this exciting, witty adventure from the producers of SHAUN OF THE DEAD.

Every industry has its divas, and that is especially true in the world of Las Vegas’ magicians. In THE INCREDIBLE BURT WONDERSTONE, Steve Carell and Steve Buscemi star as two superstar magicians who have raked in millions with their illusions for several years, but when their friendship dissolves just as a guerilla street magician (Jim Carrey) looks to steal their audience, they must repair their partnership and get back in touch with their love of magic before it’s too late.

We can’t wait to see all the great films set to be featured at SXSW this year and look forward to sharing them with you as soon as they become available. Until then, hit us up on Facebook to let us know which SXSW films of the past are your favorite!
