2012 is a disaster film directed by Roland Emmerich. The film has an ensemble cast of celebrities, including John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Danny Glover, Thandie Newton, Oliver Platt, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Woody Harrelson.

Critics remain divided on their reactions to 2012. While most recognize that Emmerich intended the movie to be a fun and unchallenging experience for moviegoers, Peter Travers gave it only one star, calling it “sheer, cynical, mind-numbing, time-wasting, money-draining, soul-sucking stupidity.” (more)

Roger Ebert, on the other hand, writes, “This is fun. 2012 delivers what it promises, and since no sentient being will buy a ticket expecting anything else, it will be, for its audiences, one of the most satisfactory films of the year.” (more)

While Emmerich has already explored the subject of earth-destroying in his other movies (INDEPENDENCE DAY, for example), never before has the earth been destroyed with such detail, and to such a great extent. Ebert clearly enjoyed 2012’s two hours of “cataclysmic special events hammering the Earth relentlessly” – and who, honestly, would walk into the theater expecting much else?
