Film downloads from Film Fresh are formatted using DivX technology, which means that you can watch your films in many different settings.

You watch your Film Fresh purchases on both PCs and Apple computers. But thanks to DivX technology, you can also burn your films to DVD and watch them in your living room on your television. Your Film Fresh movies will play in a variety of standard and Blu-Ray DVD players. And you can watch them on PlayStation 3.

But first you will need to get a few preliminaries out of the way. Setting up your computer, DVD player and PlayStation 3 for Film Fresh playback is simple, and only has to be done once!

To make things easy, we’ve provided the instructions below, which should tell you everything you need to know.

What is the resolution of the movies I buy from Film Fresh?

Film Fresh downloads are standard resolution -- 720x480 NTSC, the same as the standard DVD. Audio is stereo quality, but not surround-sound.

What do I need to know to download films from Film Fresh?

First, you’ll need to do the following:

1. Download and install the DivX movie player.
2. Create a DivX account.

Once you’ve completed those two steps, you can download films to your computer over your Internet connection. You’ll be able to watch them on your computer, or move them onto other DivX-enabled devices, like your DVD player.

To watch your films on other devices, you’ll need to:

3. Register these devices to your DivX account.

Each of these steps takes only a few minutes.

What kind of computer do I need?

Just about any recent computer model should work for downloading and playing your films.

Are you a Windows user? You should have Windows XP/Vista installed on their computer, with at least 32MB of video RAM. Need to know more? Here are the full requirements for Windows.

Macintosh users should have OS 10.4 installed, an Intel processor and at least 512MB of RAM. Here are the full requirements for Macintosh.

How do I download and install the DivX movie player?

The DivX movie player is free and easy to install.

Window users need to download the DivX Player for Windows.

Macintosh users need to download the DivX Player for Mac.

The links above will take you to the DivX download page for your operating system. Just click on the download link that appears on that page and follow the installation prompts.

How do I create a DivX account?

After you’ve installed the DivX player, open it. Go to the DivX player’s “Tools” menu and select “User Account.”

Fill out the form you find there and submit it. (As part of this process, you’ll be asked to enter a security question and answer.)

After you’ve completed the form, a confirmation email will be sent to the address you provided in the form. Just click on the link in that email, and your account will be verified.

Now you’re ready to buy and watch films!

How do I purchase and download a film from Film Fresh?

This is an easy one. Just browse through the Film Fresh site and select the films you want to buy. (Note: Some films on the Film Fresh site are available in DVD format only, and can’t be downloaded.) When you’re ready to check out, go to your shopping cart and complete your purchase, just as you would at any online store.

Once you’ve paid, you’ll be presented with a download link for each film you’ve purchased. (These links will also be emailed to you, in case you want to download your films later.)

When you click on this link, you’ll download a small file called a .tix file. This isn’t your film! It’s just the first step in the download process.

After it has downloaded to your desktop, click on the .tix file. Your DivX player will open and your film will begin to download.

Depending on the speed of your connection, the download should take from 30 minutes to 2 hours. At the end of that time, you’ll find a .divx movie file on your hard drive – the file will be about 1GB in size.

If, for some reason, your tix.file download is interrupted, just go back to your purchase link and click on the download link again.

If your actual .divx film download is interrupted, just click on the partially-downloaded .divx file and it will resume downloading, starting where it left off!

How do I play the film on my computer?

On your computer, you will watch your Film Fresh download within the DivX player.

The .divx film file is formatted for “progressive download,” which means that you can start watching the film while it is still downloading. After a certain amount of the film has been downloaded -- enough to insure smooth playback -- the DivX player will allow you to begin watching the film.

After the file has downloaded completely, you can watch it as many times as you want, of course. You own it.

What if I want to play my films on my DVD player?

Here’s where things get interesting. One of the advantages of DivX lies in the wide variety of electronic devices that incorporate DivX technology. You can watch your films on many different devices once they have been registered to your account.

First, you need to make sure that you’ve got a DivX Certified device. Many devices – DVD players, Blu-Ray players, PlayStation 3 -- actually display the DivX logo somewhere on the surface of the device. Some include the DivX logo in the owner’s manual that comes with the device. If you can find any of these logos, you can be certain that your electronic device is DivX enabled!

Once you’ve determined that you have a DivX Certified device, you need to register that device to your DivX account online. After you’ve registered your device (and you can register up to six separate devices in addition to your computer), that device will recognize and play the films you’ve downloaded.

How do I register my DVD player so that I can use it to watch Film Fresh downloads?

Turn on your DivX Certified DVD player and navigate to the DVD player’s setup menu. Somewhere within the menu will be a selection that displays your 8- or 10-digit DivX registration number. Write this number down.

Open the DivX Player on your computer. Go to the “Tools” menu and select “Device Manager.” (You might have to log into your DivX account to do this.)

Follow the instructions that appear. You’ll have to select the name of your DVD manufacturer, enter the registration code that you wrote down from your DVD player, and also enter a nickname for your DVD player (such as “Living Room DVD).

Here’s the only complicated part. After you’ve registered your DVD player, the DivX Player will download a small .divx file with the same title as the nickname you’ve given to your device (for example, “Living Room DVD.divx”).

You need to burn this file onto a DVD disc (or copy it onto a USB stick, if your DVD player allows this sort of file transfer). Then, you need to play this file on your DVD player. That will complete the registration process.

Once your DVD player has been registered to your DivX account in this manner, it will automatically play every film download you purchase from Film Fresh.

How do I watch my films using PlayStation 3?

Turn on your PlayStation 3 and go to your “System Preferences.” Select “DivX” within those preferences, and you will see your 8- or 10-digit DivX registration number. Write this number down.

Then download and install the free DivX software bundle from DivX.com. This will install the DivX Player, which you will need to finish the registration process.

After you’ve installed the DivX player, open it. Go to the DivX player’s “Tools” menu and select “User Account.”

Fill out the form you find there and submit it. A confirmation email will be sent to the address you provided in the form. Just click on the link in that email, and your account will be verified.

Then you will need to register your PlayStation 3 to your DivX account. This will allow your PlayStation 3 to recognize films you’ve downloaded.

Open the DivX Player. Go to the “Tools” menu and select “Device Manager.” (You might have to log into your DivX account to do this.) Then select “Register Device.”

Choose “Sony” as the brand of your device and enter the DivX registration code you found in your “System Preferences.” Follow the instructions that appear.

When the instructions ask you whether you want to burn the registration file or save it, we recommend that you save it for now, and burn the file later after you’ve completely enabled your PlayStation 3.

After you’ve saved the file, go to the “Videos” menu, choose “Data Disk” and then choose and play the registration file. This will complete the registration of your PlayStation 3.

Once your PlayStation 3 has been registered to your DivX account in this manner, it will automatically play your Film Fresh downloads.

To transfer your downloads from your computer, burn a DVD of your download or transfer the download to your PlayStation 3 using a USB drive.

What if I forget the password to my DivX account?

To retrieve your password, first open the DivX Player on your computer.

Click on the Player’s “Help” menu and select “Forgotten Password.” Enter your email address and select “Next.”

You’ll be asked to answer the security question you submitted when you registered initially. When you’ve completed this step, you’ll receive an email that will allow you to reset your password.
