Jim Carey's Gay Comedy, A Disappointing DATE NIGHT, and Harmony Korine's TRASH HUMPERS Finds A Distributor

PHILIP MORRIS, a gay comedy-drama about two men who fall in love while
in prison. The film received mixed reviews after it premiered at the
Sundance Film Festival, and since then, the film's release date has
been postponed enough to prompt questions from eager audiences, who
suspect that the postponing has something to do with the film's
explicit sexual content (more).
Fey and Carell star in DATE NIGHT but might be better off as TV stars.
LOS
ANGELES TIMES writer Patrick Goldstein asks how Tina Fey and Steve
Carell, the stars of "two of the funniest, most sophisticated shows on
TV" (30 ROCK and THE OFFICE, respectively) could have possibly made the
"ramshackle, almost totally forgettable" movie, DATE NIGHT, which
opened this past weekend. The film made only $25.2 million at the box
office, which apparently is a much lower number than 20th Century Fox
expected. "The movie's ad campaign shamelessly exploited all the
goodwill we have toward its two stars," Goldstein writes. "If you want
to see sparkling comedy and compelling drama, you'd have much better
luck staying home, curled up in front of your TV set instead of hiring
a baby-sitter and fighting traffic getting to the multiplex." While
that may be true, it seems as if Goldstein has forgotten about great
Fey & Carell films like MEAN GIRLS and ANCHORMAN (more).
The record label
Drag City, which has released material from Pavement, Joanna Newsom,
and Will Oldham, will release Harmony Korine's highly regarded and
controversial film, TRASH HUMPERS. Indiewire's readers voted TRASH
HUMPERS the "Best Undistributed Film of 2009" on their year-end poll.
The film follows the day-to-day existance of several old, deformed
sociopaths in Nashville, where they drink copious amounts of alcohol,
destroy televisions, and hump trash cans (hence the title). “It’s not
that different from booking a tour,” Drag City said, “and there’s a lot
less gear involved" (more).
