2046: A pulp novel. The number of the room next door. The date of Hong Kong's complete integration into China. In this sequel of sorts to Wong Kar Wei's celebrated IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE, Tony Leung Chiu Wai plays Chow Mo Wan, a writer and womanizer. Chow Mo Wan is writing a pulp nouvella about a far away city where people go to recapture their memories. He names the book 2046, after the number of the room next door, where a beautiful woman resides. His life is full of beautiful women, past, present and future... six, to be precise, played by Li Gong, Ziyi Zhang and Maggie Cheung, among others. As Wong Kar Wai fans know, plot descriptions do not communicate the cinematic depth of his films. Wong operates at an operatic level, and in this film, he infuses every scene with beauty and longing. 2046 is an elusive meditation on the human heart and its search for love.
