Mati is a spunky street vendor and single mother known throughout the village as Madam Brouette, a proud and independent woman who defies the male-centered traditions of her culture with hopes of leading a dignified life. Having escaped from a violent marriage, she dreams of rising above the world of abuse that surrounds her by opening a café. Fate steps in when she meets and falls in love with Naago, a smooth-talking charmer who happens to be a crooked cop. When the neighborhood awakens to the sound of bullets and Naago is found dead, all fingers point to Mati. Part detective story, part fable, this rhythmic tale of passion, ambition and betrayal is a gem of new African cinema.
