This Just In - 11/10/09

Every Tuesday Film Fresh has your new releases. Start checking out the blog for updates in our "This Just In" column. Here you'll find the latest films that have gone live on the site.

This week we have THE UGLY TRUTH starring Brett Butler and Katherine Hegel. This R-rated romantic comedy was written by three women who wanted bring some raunchiness back to the genre. Critics praised the performances of both Hegel and Butler, but they generally gave the film a negative review. Claudia Puig of USA TODAY said in her original review, “THE UGLY TRUTH offers decent performances by attractive actors hampered by a bland script.” (more)

These types of reviews didn’t hamper the film's success; it made $88 million domestically and grossed nearly $200 worldwide. (more)

This marks another hit for Australian director Robert Luketic, whose other work includes LEGALLY BLONDE and 21. Seems he’s good at making crowd pleasers.

Take a look at an interview back from the films initial release with both Butler and Hegel to get the actor’s perspective on the movie. (more)

Let us know what you think. Were the critics right, or do Butler and Hegel make this romantic comedy worth a download?

Another new release is the film ENLIGHTEN UP!, a documentary chronicling one man’s exposure and adventure into the world of Yoga. This film by Kate Churchill features encounters with a diverse group of Yoga practitioners, including celebrities and gurus.

Walter Addiego, critic for the SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE, calls the film an “engaging documentary…with humor and an open spirit.” (more)

Give this documentary a view and listen to this interview with Churchill on NPR’s “All Things Considered” back in April of this year. (more)

There’s also FAMILIAR STRANGERS, the family dramedy from Zackary Adler. FAMILIAR STRANGERS tells the story of a family reuniting during the Thanksgiving holiday. This is Adler’s first feature film and features Nikki Reed of TWILIGHT fame as well as DJ Qualls from 2000’s ROAD TRIP.

Tyler Perry has a little a brother and he’s written and directed his own play that comes straight to DVD and download. In GOD SEND ME A MAN, the younger Perry tells the story of a 20-something women who decides to end her promiscuous ways and set a better example for her younger siblings.

Finally, check out Michael Keaton’s (BATMAN, BEETLEJUICE) directorial debut THE MERRY GENTLEMAN.  In this drama, a woman runs away from an abusive relationship and forms an unlikely friendship with a hitman in Chicago. The film stars Kelly Macdonald  (NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN) and Keaton himself. Check out this interview with Keaton from April 30, 2009 concerning the film and find out why Roger Ebert says it “is original, absorbing and curiously moving in ways that are far from expected.” (more)
