Hey Baby!

Getting ready for a new baby can be stressful to say the least, especially if it’s baby #1. Be sure to load up on much needed rest and relaxation before the due date by kicking back and enjoying one of our many baby-themed films. As these comedies show, there are countless ways of starting a family, and none of them are without their share of chaos.

Inspired by the perennial bestseller, WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE EXPECTING (2013) tracks five couples whose intertwined lives are upended by the challenges of impending parenthood. As each of the soon-to-be parents prepare themselves in their own way, they quickly learn that no matter how much they plan, life doesn’t always deliver what’s expected. Starring  Cameron Diaz, Matthew Morrison, Anna Kendrick, Chace Crawford, Chris Rock, Dennis Quaid, Elizabeth Banks, and Jennifer Lopez.

Christina Ricci stars as Dedee, a foul-mouthed and manipulative 16-year-old, in the 1998 comedy THE OPPOSITE OF SEX. After burying her stepfather, Dedee heads to Indiana to visit her gay half-brother Bill (Martin Donovan) and proceeds to seduce Bill’s new boyfriend Matt (Ivan Sergei). After informing Matt that she’s pregnant, the two steal $10,000 from Bill’s safety deposit box and hightail it across the country to Los Angeles. But when Matt’s former beau Jason (Johnny Galecki) becomes suspicious of Matt’s disappearance, he accuses Bill (his former teacher) of molesting him while he was a student, putting Bill’s job in jeopardy and forcing him to pursue Matt and Dedee to Los Angeles to clear his name.

Canadian mockumentary THE BABY FORMULA (2008) tells the story of Athena (Angela Vint) and Lilith (Megan Fahlenbock), two adventurous women in love, who like many couples, want to have a biological child of their own. With the help of Jim (Matt Baram), a trusted lab technician, they use an experimental procedure to use sperm made from Lilith’s stem cells to impregnate Athena. Though Lilith is excited that they will soon be welcoming their new baby, she secretly wishes that she got to experience the pregnancy as well. Going behind Athena’s back, she has Jim use the same procedure on her. With both women hopped up on pregnancy hormones at the same time, many spats ensue, but the real trouble starts when their families come into town. The likeable and fun film is elevated by the fact that both Angela Vint and Megan Fahlenbock were actually pregnant during the shooting of the film.

NOBODY’S BABY (2001), a quirky indie comedy starring Gary Oldman, Skeet Ulrich and Radha Mitchell, follows two small-time criminals on the run from the law. Their plans are interrupted when one of them rescues a baby from a wrecked car and decides to keep it, despite knowing nothing about childcare. With the help of a diner waitress and her neighbor, they set up a home in a trailer park full of colorful characters and like all new families, find a way to make it all work.

Directed by Broken Lizard member Jay Chandrasekhar, THE BABYMAKERS (2013) revolves around a man who decides to rob a sperm back with his friends after having trouble conceiving a child of his own with his wife. Starring Paul Schneider and Olivia Munn along with several members of the Broken Lizard team, this madcap comedy is sure to have you both laughing and cringing at the film’s hilarious hijinks.
