The Unexpected Success of CLASH OF THE TITANS, the Death of TV Film Criticism, and the Rise of the Outer Boroughs

CLASH OF THE TITANS, an Easter favorite.

Despite its sour reviews, CLASH OF THE TITANS managed
not only to top box office charts this past weekend, but to set new
all-time records. The film earned $67 million in US theaters, breaking
the record for the largest opening film on Easter weekend. This
certainly isn't the first time that ticket sales haven't agreed with
top film critics, yet the discrepancy this time around is particularly
notable: Peter Travers called the film "a sham, with good actors going
for the pay and using beards and heavy make-up to hide their shame."

America says: who cares!! (more)

With
the final season of "At The Movies" on the horizon, speculation over
the possible "death" of televised film criticism is gaining speed. In Disney's
statement that addresses the show's demise, the company says, “From a
business perspective, it became clear this weekly, half-hour, broadcast
syndication series was no longer sustainable.”
But why? David Itzkoff
of the NEW YORK TIMES argues that the program's cancellation reflects
changes in the film and television industries, as the Web's extensive
offerings of free film reviews undermines the value of a television
show like "At the Movies". Yet even Roger Ebert, once the star of the
show, says that 3-D blockbusters now dominate the market and succeed
independently of critics -- as we just saw yesterday (see above). The last episode of "At
The Movies" will air in August (more).

According
to GOTHAMIST, Woody Allen and Carrie Bradshaw can keep Manhattan:
younger filmmakers are shooting their movies in the outer boroughs of
Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. Three recent films, COP OUT,
BROOKLYN'S FINEST, and CITY ISLAND were all shot on location in various
neighborhoods outside Manhattan, and not only because its cheaper.
Anyone whose anyone knows that's where all the cool people are these
days (more).
